The city of Pacifica held its first Rocket Run since the onset of the pandemic and four dozen local athletes made their way from the Community Center to Fronteirland Park in time for Fourth of July festivities.
The overall male winner was Marcus Balisteri, who competed in the 14- to 19-year-old division, and finished with a time of 32:32.15. Lauren Matheau, competing in the 30- to 39-year-old range finished in 33:10.87 and was the overall winner among female competitors.
Other division winners included Ross Ellison (40-49), Chadwick Baumbach (50-59), Sophia Zygarewicz (14-19), Shawn Gallagher (60-69), Kathryne Faherty (40-49), Tony Del Vecchio (60-69), Olin Lanachen (under 13), Lori Terry (50-59), Michelle Smith (60-69), Gerald McGowan (80-89), Laney Bahaglar (under 13), Marcia Martin (70-79) and Marcus Johnson (20-29).
For 38 years the Pacifica Sports Club has been promoting Pacifica sports programs and local athletes. Annually, the PSC hosts an awards breakfast for selected athletes. More than 500 local athletes have been recognized for their skills over the past years.
On Sunday, hundreds of athletes gathered at Pillar Point Harbor in the early hours of the morning to compete in the annual Half Moon Bay Triathlon. Spirits were high and the anticipation was palpable at this, the first such triathlon since the pandemic.
Like so many ceremonies and events over the last two years, last year’s Mavericks Surf Awards was an all-virtual affair. This year, contest organizers are planning on a large in-person gathering to honor another year of massive waves ridden on the Coastside.
