I would like to add some thoughts to the temporary rentals that have been a subject of a Dec. 28 Tribune article. Although our city does receive revenue through taxes from the short-term rentals of most of these properties, the article fails to note what businesses and citizens of Pacifica lose.
Besides the obvious lack of community mentioned in the article, children in schools, etc., I would like to suggest that our businesses can very well suffer from them, as well. It wasn't long ago, that the Tribune noted how our hotels are not filled. Do the taxes received from the rentals make up for the losses from the hotels? If renters can go to a home and bring groceries in to cook, how does this affect the restaurants in our area as well as the taxes produced because of them? And, how will this affect the jobs that both the hotels and restaurants provide to our community when/if business is diminished by lack of customers?
