Maybe you knew Ruben Salcido from his jazz performances, as a music teacher, as someone you passed hiking up Montara Mountain or jogging along the beach, as a neighbor working in his yard, or just a friendly guy with a ready smile and a light in his eyes.
Born in 1946, Ruben grew up in the East Bay and moved to Pacifica in 1981. He worked as a software engineer in the Bay Area, with stints in Europe and Bahrain. Part of an extensive community of Bay Area musicians, Ruben played saxophone and flute in groups ranging from 18-piece big bands to duos, from Latin jazz to church music, and everything in between — bebop, straight-ahead, funk, R&B, Brazilian, and more. He debuted his CD “Sal Si Puedes,” a tribute to his parents, at the Mildred Owen Hall in Pacifica. Following a long autoimmune illness, Ruben passed away at home in January 2022.
