Dan DeBardeleben was born on Sept. 26, 1944, in San Francisco, the son of Bud and Iva DeBardeleben. They all moved to Pacifica in the early 1950s. After graduation from Terra Nova High School, Dan joined the Navy to serve his country on the USS Oriskany. That took Dan to Japan for two years. After returning to his home in Pacifica, Dan became the owner of the first surf shop in Pacifica. Dan loved surfing and surfed Mavericks in Half Moon Bay many times. Dan also loved diving for abalone with his dad along the coast.
Bicycling was Dan’s greatest love in life. In June 2014, Dan bicycled with 20 other guys and gals from Ocean Beach in San Francisco across the United States to New Hampshire on the Atlantic Ocean. The ride raised thousands of dollars for the Alzheimer’s Association.
