The Pacifica Pier sustained serious damage in January. Adam Pardee / Tribune

The city of Pacifica announced on Wednesday that it plans to reopen much of the storm-whipped Pacifica Pier at on Friday. The pier has been closed since Jan. 14 after high winds and waves damaged a 40-foot section.

The damage was done to the west-facing deck and railing and city officials deemed it unsafe to use at the time. A subsequent engineering report revealed serious damage to parts of the pier that run parallel to the shoreline and that portion will remain closed indefinitely.

The city says it will have to identify funding to make the necessary repairs.
