The city of Pacifica said Thursday that it was closing the city’s iconic municipal pier indefinitely while it assesses damage caused by recent king tides and large swells.

City officials say a 40-foot section of the pier’s west-facing deck and concrete railing has been damaged. As a result, the Public Works Department deemed the pier unsafe for visitors until further notice, according to a press release.

The city is engaging structural engineering firms to assess the damage and develop a plan for repair. While there is no firm estimate of how long it will take, the release “anticipates the Pacifica Municipal Pier will be closed for up to a month or longer.”
