Surviving their closest match of the season, the Terra Nova badminton team remained undefeated with a 10-5 win over Burlingame last Thursday. They are 9-0 in the Peninsula Athletic League Division, 10-0 overall.
Some might have expected this to be a transitional season with the retirement of long-time teacher and coach Pam Regan after the last school year. But Pita Ramos, a science teacher at Terra Nova, stepped in and has done an excellent job guiding the program to its current undefeated record. She has reaped the benefit of having a lot of veteran players.
Burlingame proved to be a much tougher opponent this time around as they swept the girls singles matches. The Tigers responded by sweeping the boys singles, boys and girls doubles, and they also picked up a win mixed doubles.
Number one boys' singles Devin Caceres won the day's most exciting match. He rallied from a 11-15 first set loss to win the next 2, 15-7, 15-12. Anthony Reinosa and Erik Caceres both won easily in the number two and three spots.
The top two boys doubles teams won three set matches. Paul Morales and Stefan Mulchand won 15-5, 13-15, 15-8, and Greg Black and Graeme Brunst won 15-6,9-15, 15-5. Louie Laurente and Kevin Tirona won in straight sets.
All three girls doubles teams won in straight sets and allowed fewer than 10 points. Jessi Lorraine and Anita Arwade, Val Broder and Samantha Haase, and Zarina Khan and Jeannette Mok continued their season long outstanding play. The mixed doubles team of Matt Fong and Jenny Yip won their match 15-7, 15-0.
