Got an urge to skateboard in a long-curving arc or maybe through a 360-turn while your back is facing the ramp? Or what about getting a completely different kind of a board and doing a gymnastic dance along the top of a breaking wave? Well then, novice or pro or somewhere in-between, it's time to step into Taitten Cowan's Log Shop at 640-A Crespi Drive for some serious shopping (rentals too) at a store which hosts one of the "largest inventories of surf and skate products from San Francisco to Santa Cruz."

The store, which dates eight years back to its first location on Palmetto, went from 1,000 square feet, to 3,500 square feet four years later then to 6,000 square feet by the next year. It's most recent expansion, which took place

when the Dollar Store moved out, has given the Log Shop 10,000 square feet to dazzle its fan base.

"The new store has a little of everything," said Cowan: "Surfboards, skateboards, clothes, shoes and an indoor skate facility."

There are also snowboards, an event room where the latest surf movies can be previewed, in-store advice, in-water lessons — the place was described by one satisfied customer as "kick-a*&!"

The shop is also barely a block away from the Pacifica Skatepark which Cowan's fundraisers helped build, and then there is of course the two block walk to the Pacific Ocean.

Born and raised in Pacifica, Cowan grew up surfing and skateboarding. And as much as his schedule allows, he is out riding his products in the Skatepark or on the Pacific.

"I opened the store because there was a void that needed to be filled," said Cowan. "Yes there were surf shops up and down the coast but the product that was available was very limited. When the store originally opened we specialized in surfboards. The store was full of internationally recognized brands of surfboards in short, retro, and longboard shapes. People knew and still know if you want to see something hand crafted by the best surfboard shapers in the world,

the Log Shop is your first stop. Since then the store has not changed; it has only grown. We have the same frame of mind with all of our departments in our store. Want a wetsuit? We have the best brands available. Want a skateboard? We not only have the best brands but you can try your new skateboard out in our new indoor skate park. On top of all that, we always have fresh new surf and skate shoes and clothes available. My purpose here is to offer the best product and customer service in Northern California."

The store has its share of famous customers, though Cowan kept mum on the names. "If I talked, they wouldn't appreciate it!" said Cowen. Well, there is one famous local fellow whose name Cowan was willing to give up. "You can see Mayor Jim Vreeland surfing on a regular basis here in Pacifica."

The Log Shop is having its grand opening on May 3 with Mayor Vreeland doing the honors at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"We want to show people the new space and give the kids the opportunity to skate with and watch pro skateboarders in our new place," said Cowan.

Cowan loves having his store in Pacifica. "This is my home. It's an amazing place to live and having my store here has let me hold events and bring the industry that I love to our town."

Store hours; Monday-Friday 9 to 7, Saturday 8-7, Sunday 8-6. (www.TaitsBoardshop.com.)
